The new headquarters of L’Oréal Germany is the striking gateway to Düsseldorf’s northern city centre. The 60-metre high cube symbolises new perspectives with its unmistakeable architecture. Developers ‘die developer’ and HPP Architekten worked with the German subsidiary of the French cosmetics group, since 2018 main tenant of the building completed the previous year, to implement this vision for the over 900 employees working there, not least in the interior design and fittings. In this project, the planners succeeded in combining an impactful design and transparency in the interior with communicative work organisation and sustainability.
The minimalist Kludi Zenta E bathroom fittings used in the roughly 50 lavatories of the glass office complex are a perfect match for the clear architectural language. At the same time, the electronic fittings ensure efficient use of energy and resources in the washing facilities on the building’s 16 floors. That makes the products by Kludi (www.kludi.com), the fittings expert from Germany’s Sauerland region, the ideal choice to meet the functional and quality standards of modern facility management in coordination with an attractive working environment.
Modern and innovative
The rhythmic façade of horizontally offset individual stories, culminating in protrusions and recesses, impacts the urban landscape as an architectural highlight. “The transparent building opens itself up to the city, and is committed not only to the employees, but also to the community. The new head offices represent the values of the L’Oréal in a special way,” explains Volker Weuthen, Senior Partner at HPP responsible for the project. That makes the cube, with its 22,000 square metres of office space, a building employees and locals can identify with. “The building and its architecture are a perfect match for our company,” confirmed Georg Held, Project Manager at L’Oréal for the beauty expert’s new headquarters in Germany. “It epitomises modernity, sustainability and innovation, and impresses with its design.” Extensive translucency and communicative structures dominate the building’s interior, designed as an open layout with glass partitions. Open and closed conference zones, ‘Think Tanks’, telephone rooms and a ‘Silent Room’ as creative retreats structure the uninterrupted spaces. The highlight feature: a 90 square-metre rooftop terrace for employees with a view of the Rhine, which will also serve as an event venue.
What makes ‘Horizon J1’ a truly modern working environment is not just the open space concepts and the combination of fixed and flexible workstations, but also the sustainable use of resources. The company is largely paperless and has significantly reduced the number of printers. Intelligent digital lighting control with high-efficiency LEDs that adjust for the time of day and occupation of working spaces is another factor that contributes towards the responsible economical and ecological use of energy.
Efficient and sustainable
The Kludi Zenta E also adheres to this fundamental principle. 80 of the modern electronic washbasin mixers are installed in the lavatories. The fittings’ infrared sensors only allow water to flow when it is actually being used. With a flow rate of 4.8 litres per minute, they are also extremely economical and highly reliable. That their design, featuring clear architectural forms, played a part almost goes without saying. “Of course we are committed to aesthetics. At the same time, the objectives of our project were transparency, innovation and sustainability. The water-saving fittings help us to create a sustainable and innovative working environment for the employees,” explains Georg Held from L’Oréal. Balanced, straight lines and faces, chrome surfaces: Kludi Zenta E also harmonises well aesthetically with the uncluttered geometry of the rooms.
